Namibia's relaxed capital and the starting point for self drive desert journeys.
Windhoek sits in the central highlands of Namibia and has a strong German colonial heritage, seen in the Christuskirche and the old buildings along Independence Avenue. The Independence Memorial Museum tells the story of the country's road to freedom.
Most travellers pick up a hire car here and head out on the open roads: south west to the red dunes of Sossusvlei, north to the waterholes of Etosha National Park, or west to Swakopmund on the Atlantic coast.
The dry winter months, May to October, are best for wildlife and driving.
