Aswan sits where the Nile narrows between granite islands and golden dunes. Feluccas drift past Elephantine Island, and colourful Nubian villages line the west bank.
The temple of Philae, rescued from the rising waters of Lake Nasser, is reached by a short boat trip, and Abu Simbel, with its four colossal statues of Ramesses II, is a day trip by road or a short flight to the south.
There are no direct flights from the UK; connect in Cairo. October to April is the best time to visit.
