Tunis has a walled medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site full of souks and old mosques, and a French era city centre along Avenue Habib Bourguiba. The Bardo Museum holds one of the world's great collections of Roman mosaics.
A short ride on the suburban train takes you to the ruins of Carthage and on to Sidi Bou Said, a cliff top village of white walls and blue doors overlooking the Gulf of Tunis. La Marsa and Gammarth have beaches and seafood restaurants.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons; summer is hot and busy on the coast.
