Sal is the most visited island of Cape Verde, in the Atlantic off West Africa. Most hotels sit around Santa Maria, a former fishing town with a pier where the catch is still landed each day, and a long beach of soft white sand.
The steady trade winds make Sal a favourite for kitesurfing and windsurfing. You can float in the salt pans of Pedra de Lume inside an old volcanic crater, and see the light in the Buracona blue eye pool.
