Santorini is what remains of a volcano that erupted around 3,600 years ago, leaving a flooded caldera ringed by cliffs. The villages of Fira and Oia cling to the cliff top, with whitewashed houses and blue domed churches looking out to sea.

Sunset at Oia draws crowds every evening, so arrive early or watch from Imerovigli instead. Boat trips sail across the caldera to the volcanic islet of Nea Kameni and the hot springs nearby.

The beaches, such as Perissa and Kamari, have black volcanic sand, and the island's vineyards grow the Assyrtiko grape. The Bronze Age town of Akrotiri was preserved under the ash.
