Porto rises in steep layers above the Douro river, and its historic centre, including the riverside Ribeira district, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The double deck Dom Luís I Bridge links the city with Vila Nova de Gaia, where the port wine lodges offer tours and tastings.
Inside São Bento railway station, around 20,000 blue and white tiles tell the story of Portugal, and many churches across the city have tiled facades too.
River cruises pass under the city's six bridges, and longer trips head up the Douro Valley, where the terraced vineyards that grow the grapes for port are also a World Heritage Site.
