A medieval market square, Wawel Castle and moving history close by.
Krakow was Poland's royal capital for centuries, and its old town came through the Second World War largely undamaged. The Main Market Square, one of the largest medieval squares in Europe, is framed by the Cloth Hall and St Mary's Basilica, where a trumpeter plays from the tower every hour.
Wawel Castle and Cathedral stand on a hill above the Vistula, and the Kazimierz district, once the heart of Jewish life in the city, is now full of cafés and galleries.
The Wieliczka Salt Mine, with chapels carved from salt, is a short drive away, and many visitors make the journey to the Auschwitz memorial and museum, about an hour and a half west.
