A lakeside city of diplomats and watchmakers, and a gateway to the Alps.
Geneva sits where the Rhône leaves Lake Geneva, with views of the Alps on clear days. The Jet d'Eau fountain shoots water 140 metres into the air from the lake, and boat trips sail along the shore past grand villas.
The city is home to the European headquarters of the United Nations at the Palais des Nations, and to the Red Cross museum. In the old town, St Pierre Cathedral has towers you can climb, and on the edge of the city, CERN welcomes visitors to its Science Gateway.
In winter, Geneva airport is the main gateway to ski resorts in the French and Swiss Alps, with Chamonix about an hour and a quarter away by road.
