Berlin wears its history openly. The Brandenburg Gate, once cut off by the Wall, now stands at the centre of a reunited city, and you can visit the glass dome of the Reichstag if you register in advance.
The Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse and the painted stretch of the East Side Gallery show what the divided city was like. Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, holds five major museums on an island in the Spree.
The city is spread out but has good public transport, and districts such as Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg are full of markets, cafés and street food.
